It’s unclear where exactly those cuts are going to come from, but Verizon owns brands like Yahoo, HuffPost, TechCrunch, Autoblog and Makers.
At the beginning of this year, Verizon Media (formerly known as Oath) laid off 800 employees, or around 7% of its staff, including HuffPost’s entire opinion section. The trend continued among media outlets throughout the year, with significant layoffs announced at publications such as BuzzFeed, Sports Illustrated and several of Gannett’s local newsrooms across the country.
A spokesperson from Verizon provided the following statement in response to an inquiry regarding the media company’s layoffs: “Our goal is to create the best experiences for our consumers and the best platforms for our customers. Today we are investing in premium content, connections and commerce experiences that connect people to their passions and continue to align our resources to opportunities where we feel we can differentiate ourselves and scale faster.”
At the time of publication, Verizon did not respond regarding the layoffs.
